Irmi Wachendorff studied Visual Communication Design at the Offenbach University of Art and Design from 2002–2008. Exchange semesters and scholarships brought her to study at the Royal Academy of Art in Brussels, the Zurich University of the Arts and the Queensland Collage of Art Brisbane during that time. After an internship with Philipp Apeloig in Paris and her graduation (with distinction), she was a designer at Frost* Design Sydney Australia from 2008–2009 and senior designer at Gottschalk + Ash Int’l Zürich from 2009–2012. Following her enthusiasm for typography she completed a masters degree in Typograph & Type Design at the Zurich University of the Arts alongside her professional activity. She won several awards and her work has been published internationally.
Since 2013 Irmi is a graduate research assistant and lecturer in the graduate program for transdisciplinary design at the Folkwang University of the Arts. Furthermore she is a research assistant within the transdisciplinary research project »Signs of Metropolises – Visual multilinguality in the Ruhr area« at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Since graduating from the M.A. Art and Design Sciences program (with distinction) in 2015 she is s PhD student and explores the multilingual typographic culture of the Ruhr area.
