ABOUT THE STUDIO
There is nothing good unless you do it yourself.
(Erich Kästner in “Morality” (Moral)
Human development in terms of production and consumption points towards a trend which has in many aspects reached or even surpassed the stress limits of environmental and social systems (1). Today’s economic and consumption styles are not viable for the future against that background. There is much talk about a change in terms of energy and natural resources for requirements like residential living, food, mobility and also communication. The German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU) sees a necessity for significant transformation (2) in the next years and decades. This will include a great challenge – specifically for the field of design.
The studio understands itself as a laboratory environment in which the idea of sustainable development (3) can be implemented in practice and experimentation. Students seek new paths towards innovation that have the potential to redefine the relationships between production and consumption, work and leisure, nature and the world of technology. Objects, processes and organisational structures are researched, developed and designed that overturn that which complies with our current view and have the potential to redefine interactions between people, technology and environment, but also between individuals. Folkwang University of the Arts, Wuppertal Institute and Fraunhofer UMSICHT create a suitable space to that end – for design, technology development and for the ownership of socio-ecological responsibility – and of course for a great time as part of a team.
